On March 29, 1980, fifteen women came together from across Beaufort County to charter the Nu Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. The chartering ceremony was held on the historical grounds of Penn Center, located on St. Helena Island, South Carolina. Andrea Stephens O’Neal and Romona Gaither were elected as the first President and Vice President of the new chapter. The other charter members were Selma Perry, Emma Campbell, Ida Campbell, Geneva Cole, Barbara Marshel, Christine Morgan, Cassie Brisbane, *Katherine Doctor, *Marguerite Campbell, *Gwendolyn White, *Thelma Houston, *Ramona Wilborn, and *Jennie Mulligan Mouzon. Affectionately known as our Golden Sisters, Romona Gaither (64 years), Barbara Marshel (64 years) and Emma Campbell (62 years), have all served over fifty years of active membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. It is on the shoulders of these fifteen women, like our original founders, that the Nu Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc. continues to be of “Service to All Mankind.”
